Why so early?

The thing I hear most is “Why so early?!” and sometimes the words are not that kind…This is the single biggest challenge for most of us, certainly for me, getting my bum on the cushion every morning. What I know for sure [thanks Oprah] is that if I don’t start my day with meditation, if I allow my mind to get a hold of me with so many important reasons as to why not, and usually I don’t even experience conscious reasons as to ‘why not?’ The day simply goes by and I realize I have not meditated. So, for me, because meditation makes my day easier, better, smoother, kinder, more gentle, I start with meditation. But it is an experiential thing, each of us must know our own reasons or motivations for meditating. That’s why we ask “what is your motivation for meditating?” What is your intention, desire or reason?
With that, there is no right or wrong time to meditate, consistency is the thing. By meditating at the same time everyday, the mind moves more easily into the meditative space, we start to train the mind, and remind your mind of who is in control. I meditate early, (7:30 am if you would like to join me in the ethers) mostly because if I don’t it won’t happen and I know that this is my foundation each day. So know your motivations, express your intentions, share your intentions and find a time that works for you and simply try to be consistent. As my mom would say, “just keep showing up, and the rest will take care of itself.” She would also include a smiley face.
Look forward to hearing about your motivations and your shared intention, or reasons why you want to meditate…
