Dear Cynthia,

Thanks for your insightful comments. I totally agree with you.

As westerners we tend to run ourselves a bit thin. We are in a never ending uphill battle of consumerism, multi-tasking and an insatiable drive to be fit and beautiful. This alone wears us out and leaves nothing in reserve. Nothing.

Rest is key. An effective mediation practice includes and considers all the aspects of our life, living in balance with space and time for the mind to rest in awareness.

Your points about taking a break are well noted!

It is easiest to ask self: What basic thing is amiss right now? Need water? Need food? Need relief? Need rest? Once that need is fulfilled the thoughts slow so that attending to and acknowledging the thoughts is easier. If it is at the end of the day, some deep breathing should quiet all so that so the mind rests and sleep comes.

For some, the "low-control" point is late-afternoon when all those needs can be met with a potty break, a drink of water, and a welcome nap...but a meeting must be attended instead.

A mini-break of deep focused breathing to energize the mind will improve the situation, after or during of course, a quick potty break while grabbing a glass of water.

There seems to be certain times of the day when my mind is less my own than other times. It seems late at night, sometimes just before bed my mind wants to visit all the places that need fixing, immediately... Negative thoughts and emotions seemingly can come from nowhere, as I watch them come-up and then sometimes do nothing but get into their story.

Do we have more power over our thoughts at certain times of the day?
